3 Tips to Spruce Up Portable Air Conditioners.

Spruce-Up-Portable-Air-ConditionersWe've reached two big milestones so far this year -- We sprang foreward into Day Light Savings time (looovvveee that extra light at the end of the day!) and we're now officially in the sensational Spring season.  Now's a great time to spruce up your portable air conditioners

Whether you use spot coolers in our server room or use portable AC units to cool special events, regular, routine maintenance will improve performance and extend the life of your portable air conditioning system.

Easy, routine maintenance tips for Springtime or any time!

  1. Freshen up the filters
Change or wash the filters.  Be sure to check both the evaporator (where the cold air comes out) AND the condenser (where the warm air is discharged) sides.  You may have disposable pleated, paper filters or washable "hog-hair" fliters.  If you need to replacement filters, contact the manufacturer or you may save time and money by purchasing supplies at a local home improvement store or HVAC supply store.  Clean filters will improve air flow, keep the coils clean and give you more cooling.
  2. Clean out the Condensate
Your unit may have a condensate tank or a condensate pump. The versatile COOLIT unitshave two condensate tanks AND a condensate pump. Slimy stuff can grow in dark, wet places.  Wash out the tanks with a mild detergent.  You can "flush" out the condensate reservoir on the pump by adding a diluted water/bleach (just a tablespoon or so) solution to the reservoir so the pump circulates the solution through the outlet tubing.  Clean condensate tanks, pump and tubing will prevent blockage and keep the spot cooler running.
  3. Clean off the Cabinet
Take a few minutes to wipe off the cabinet.  You may want to use an all-purpose cleaning spray to cut through any dirt and grime left behind from extended use.  No one wants a scruffy looking machine in their server room or at their special event.  You'll take better care of the unit if it's clean and presentable.  Bottom line: Looks matter.

Ahhhh.... Spring!  I must admit, as much as I hate the act of cleaning, I sure love working and living in a clean environment.  So before you get into the hectic, hurried pace of the hot, humid summer, take a day and spruce up your portable air conditioners.

There are a few online communities where consumer can get some educated help.
First one is hvac-talk.com, which is a forum for HVAC professionals, but you can ask any technical questions and can get more informative answers. But the website does not allow to discuss the price or cost of HVAC projects.

The second is "Heating and cooling" forum of gardenweb.com, where you can ask technical question and also discuss the whether the cost and price of heating or cooling are reasonable.

The third one iswww.hvac-cost.com where consumer can share their purchase price of HVAC system or search the database to see how much other consumers are paying for a similar system at the same city or state.

Here are some simple portable air conditioner cleaning tips:
Like window and central air conditioners, portable air conditioners have filters. The filter needs maintaining because it can get clogged with dust. Dust reduces airflow, which results in poor cooling performance. Dirty portable air conditioning filters can also lead to increased running costs. The filter should be cleaned every couple of weeks in the summer. http://www.crazymountainheaters.com

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions: things you'll need:
• Vacuum cleaner
• Soapy water
• Cloth
1. Disconnect the power supply.
2. Remove the filter. The filter is likely to be located behind the outlet grille. Manufacturers make it easy to pull out portable air conditioners filters because they want to encourage you to clean it. Look for a flap type filter handle, it should be marked. Pull the handle and slide the filter out of the unit.
3. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust. You can wash the filter with detergent if it is filthy. Rinse it and dry it thoroughly before re-installing it.
4. Hold the filter handle and push the filter back into place.

Aside from these, we also need cooling and refrigeration and this is why learning basic information on how to cut down from our monthly electricity bills is helpful. We have to know how to maintain our heating and cooling systems so that we will be able to use them for many years to come as they continue to function proper and not consume too much electricity.

Our air conditioning systems give us the comfort that we need especially during the summer season. Proper air circulation is important to avoid diseases and bacteria from spreading in our living spaces. The same goes with our heating systems such as our furnaces. Purchasing quality HVAC systems is one thing but maintaining them is another. We can even cut down from our monthly electricity bill if we learn how to economize and regularly check on our appliances to identify any problems early.

This past Spring we purchased a portable AC unit for a room upstairs that gets a lot of sunlight and doesn't have great airflow. It has worked really well, and that room is now one of our favorites to relax in. However, with Fall ending and Winter coming fast we've noticed how cold the room gets! We found a good deal on a new rheem gas furnace and now we can enjoy that room all year!
